Independent Reading:
What Children Do
Read infromation from an "author study poster" created by the class.
Using a "How to Choose a Book" chart to choose books.
Read familiar books.
Read independent-level texts.
Look at pictures in a book and tell the story (K5 and first grade)
Share favorite parts ofa book with a partner.
Materials (some suggestions)
A sign clearly labeling the space.
A wide variety of books with a balance of fiction/nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, big books, student-made books, etc.
Books and poems representing the cultures of all students in the class.
Books that are sorted and labeled in bins/boxes.
Comfortable seating.

Posters made by the class on authors, how to choose books, how to [[CLP-Literacy Work Station Ideas#|write a book]] review...
Forms and paper with pencils for writing responses and reviews.

Talking about your ideas for writing; tell a partner what you are thinking about vwriting
Writing a description- of something I see in the room, of a classmate, of my pet, of my mom, of my teacher
Telling a friend a story
Writing down a story you were told
Doing "Expert" writing
Writing messages others can easily read and understand
Begin to use reference materials (e.g word walls, dictionaries, etc.)
Playing with creative ideas (e.g story starters, research reports on topics read about)
